Welcome to Southwestern! Fall Term 2024 “Welcome Week” Activities - Southwestern Oregon Community College (1)

We’re excited to welcome you to Fall Term of the 2024-2025 academic year! Whether you’re joining us online, in-person at our Coos or Curry Campus (or a mix of both), we’re glad to have you here. Mark Your Calendar—Fall Term classes begin on Monday, September 16.

  • Coos Campus: View Campus Map – Located at 1988 Newmark Ave., Coos Bay.
  • Curry Campus: Just north of Brookings on U.S. Highway 101 at 96082 Lone Ranch Parkway, Brookings. Since this campus is a single building, the front desk staff can help you with any questions.

FALL TERM 2024 “WELCOME WEEK” ACTIVITY SCHEDULES

COOS CAMPUS (1988 Newmark Ave., Coos Bay)

*Activities with asterisk indicate mandatory attendance for housing students.

Tuesday, 9/10 – Friday, 9/13 there will be music, games and various activities taking place across campus.

Monday, 9/9

  • All Day = CAMPUS SERVICES CLOSED for Staff In-Service

Tuesday, 9/10

  • 9:00 am – 4:00 pm = Housing Move-In (Lighthouse Depot): Housing students only – move-in to apartments. Check-in at Lighthouse Depot for further directions.
  • 5:00 pm – 6:00 pm = Parent Talk for Housing Families (Umpqua Hall 184): Intended for parents/guardians of students living in student housing. A Q&A session to ask any remaining questions and to gain any clarity about student housing.
  • 6:00 pm – 8:30 pm = Housing Student Orientation* (Hales Center for the Performing Arts “PAC” located in Empire Hall): Important information about expectations and everything you need to know about living on campus. Meet your Resident Assistant’s (RA’s), the Resident Directors (RD’s) and other housing staff.

Wednesday, 9/11

  • 10:00 am – 11:00 am = DEI Talk with Emily Purry* (Umpqua 184): Not all disabilities are visible. All students are invited to join Emily Purry as she leads a conversation about accessibility, disability awareness, creating inclusive spaces, and disability in the workplace.
  • 10:00 am – 12:00 noon = Learn to Crochet (Library, 2nd Floor of Tioga Hall): Learn to crochet! We’ll learn the (very) basics and make a small toy book. All materials provided.
  • 11:00 am – 2:00 pm = Lunch with Dining Services (Empire Hall): Use your meal plan or (if you don’t have a meal plan) purchase lunch and enjoy the amazing lake views from the cafeteria!
  • 2:00 pm – 3:00 pm = Faculty Bingo (Faculty Offices – Bingo Cards Available Around Campus): Your faculty instructors are more than just the people talking to you during class a couple times a week. Participate in Faculty Bingo, you may be more alike than you think!
  • 2:00 pm – 3:30 pm = Women’s Soccer vs. Lane (Track/Soccer Field): Cheer on the Lakers as they battle neighboring rivals on the soccer pitch!
  • 3:00 pm – 5:00 pm = RC Cars (Library, 2nd Floor of Tioga Hall): RC cars in the library! Bring your own car or use one of ours.
  • 5:00 pm – 7:00 pm = Volleyball vs. College of the Redwoods (Prosper Hall): Cheer on the Lakers as they volley it out on the court!
  • 6:30 pm – 8:00 pm = Minute-To-Win-It (Hales Center for the Performing Arts “PAC” located in Empire Hall): Join, watch and laugh with fellow students as they compete in quick, fun Minute-To-Win-It style games.

Thursday, 9/12

  • 10:00 am – 11:00 am = Financial Aid & Student Work Q&A (Umpqua Hall 184): Financial Aid and Business Office Staff will be answering your questions about how to get money and how to pay your student account.
  • 10:00 am – 12:00 noon = Learn to Crochet (Library, 2nd Floor of Tioga Hall): Learn to crochet! We’ll learn the (very) basics and make a small toy book. All materials provided.
  • 11:00 am – 2:00 pm = Elkhorn BBQ Food Truck Lunch Sponsored by SWOCC Benefits Navigation and Basic Needs Oregon (Behind Stensland Hall near the Flag Poles): Enjoy lunch from this popular local food truck, compliments of SWOCC Benefits Navigation and Basic Needs Oregon! (While supplies last). Engage with other students and staff in various outdoor games that will be taking place nearby.
  • 2:00 pm – 3:00 pm = Faculty Bingo (Faculty Offices – Bingo Cards Available Around Campus): Your faculty instructors are more than just the people talking to you during class a couple times a week. Participate in Faculty Bingo, you may be more alike than you think!
  • 3:00 pm – 5:00 pm = RC Cars (Library, 2nd Floor of Tioga Hall): RC cars in the library! Bring your own car or use one of ours.
  • 4:00 pm – 5:00 pm = C.L. Lindsey* (Hales Center for the Performing Arts “PAC” located in Empire Hall): Sex, Social Media, and the Law – Required event for first time freshmen and Housing students.
  • 6:30 pm – 8:00 pm = Minute-To-Win-It (Hales Center for the Performing Arts “PAC” located in Empire Hall): Join, watch and laugh with fellow students as they compete in quick, fun Minute-To-Win-It style games.

Friday, 9/13

  • 10:00 am – 12:00 noon = Learn to Crochet (Library, 2nd Floor of Tioga Hall): Learn to crochet! We’ll learn the (very) basics and make a small toy book. All materials provided.
  • 10:30 am – 2:00 pm = Ice Cream Brought to you by the Advising Team (Between Stensland Hall and Dellwood Hall): Enjoy an ice cream bar compliments of the amazing advising team! While supplies last.
  • 11:00 am – 2:00 pm = The Plate Food Truck Lunch (Behind Stensland Hall near the Flag Poles): Come purchase some lunch from a popular local food truck and engage with peers in various outdoor games nearby.
  • 2:00 pm – 3:00 pm = Faculty Bingo (Faculty Offices – Bingo Cards Available Around Campus): Your faculty instructors are more than just the people talking to you during class a couple times a week. Participate in Faculty Bingo, you may be more alike than you think!
  • 3:00 pm – 5:00 pm = Hypnotist* (Hales Center for the Performing Arts “PAC” located in Empire Hall): Have you ever been hypnotized? This is your chance! Or, maybe just watch fellow Lakers get put under a spell…either way, join us and meet hypnotist and comedian Chris Jones of America’s Got Talent!
  • 3:00 pm – 5:00 pm = RC Cars (Library, 2nd Floor of Tioga Hall): RC cars in the library! Bring your own car or use one of ours.
  • 6:30 pm – 8:00 pm = Mental Health Presentation* (Hales Center for the Performing Arts “PAC” located in Empire Hall): Corey Widman and his wife Kelly lost their college-aged son to suicide in 2023. Listen to their story and learn why tomorrow needs you.

Saturday, 9/14

  • 9:45 am – 12:00 noon = Service Saturday! John Topits Trail Clean-Up (Hull Street Entrance to John Topits Park): Volunteer with the Oregon Bay Area Beautification (OBAB), the Coos Bay Parks Department, and the Coos Watershed Association to help beautify John Topits Park and the SWOCC Campus. Bring work gloves, cutting tools for shrubbery, trash grabbers (if you have them), water, sunscreen, and wear appropriate clothes for working outdoors. Leaf blowers, weed wrenches, trash bags and disposal will be provided.
  • 12:00 noon – 2:00 pm = Men’s Soccer vs. Tacoma (Track/Soccer Field): Cheer on the Lakers as they battle it out on the soccer pitch!

CURRY CAMPUS (96082 Lone Ranch Parkway, Brookings)

Saturday, 9/14

  • 10:00 am – 2:00 pm = Laker Welcome & BBQ! We encourage all students to join the fun! Get your questions answered by faculty and staff—whether it’s about admissions, graduation, or anything in between. Take a tour, grab some BBQ from 12:00 noon to 2:00 pm, and enjoy door prizes, scavenger hunts, and a sneak peek at our heavy equipment simulators. Bring your family along for a great time.
